Discipleship

Discovering Church Membership-Discipleship 101          Leader: Cyndi Alviani, DCE / Location: Music Room 109
13 Sessions: 1/29/2012 through 4/29/2012

If you are interested in learning more about Christianity or are investigating membership at St. Luke, this class is for you. If you have been a member for a number of years and would like to refresh your knowledge of Lutheran Christian basics, this class is also for you. These lessons will start you on a journey — one we hope will last a lifetime. You will come to understand the difference between being a member and being a disciple, between knowing Christ and being committed to Christ, between practicing a solitary faith and belonging in the “community of faith” with other devoted Christians.

Devotion to the Word

Study of Paul’s Letter to the Romans        Leader: Pastor Barry Keurulainen / Location: Transept

The study of Romans continues. “In the fall of 1515 a professor began to teach the book of Romans to his university students. As he painstakingly prepared his lectures, he gradually realized, and then embraced, the book’s central theme—salvation is by grace alone through faith alone. That spark of truth ignited Martin Luther’s own spiritual life and the fires of reformation that would follow” (J. Theodore Mueller, translator of Luther’s Classic Commentary on Romans). You won’t want to miss this study of what some call a “theology textbook” for its thorough explanation of the Christian faith and life.

Journey Through the Word

Leader: Various / Location: Church Library, Room 206

Consider joining this seasoned group of Bible Study veterans who are on a book-by-book journey of God’s Word. This group is currently studying the Old Testament book of Job. Learn how at times, God allows human suffering for His own purposes. Though Job often questions God, he also displays an incredible faith and trust in God as he tells God, “I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.”

God Heard Their Cry          Leader: Don Olmstead / Location: Bridal Room 207
5 Sessions 1/29/2012 through 2/26/2012

In ancient times, nothing was bigger than Egypt: powerful pharaohs, strong armies, and a multitude of gods. God’s people were no match against the Egyptians. In this eighth volume of Faith Lessons with renowned teacher and historian Ray Vander Laan, discover how God answers the cry of His persecuted people and proclaims Himself LORD to them and their oppressors. Filmed on location in the Middle East, this DVD series will transform your understanding of God and challenge you to be a true follower of Jesus.

Spiritual Growth

FAITH Café       Leader: Various/ Location: School Library, Room 104

It’s a time for fellowship and growth in His Word. If you can’t make it to a twelve-week study then maybe this is the class for you. Each week will be a new topic and different leader. Wired Word, a look at a current news story from a Biblical perspective has been popular. During this Bible Class hour enjoy Christian fellowship with others and join with one another in a time of prayer and growth in the Word.

“But as for you,
continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of,
because you know those from whom you learned it,
and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures,
which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
~2 Timothy 3: 14-17
